Race & Ethnicity in US Baseball

Overview of Lesson:

Students will trace the development of Americans’ ideas about race and ethnicity through the history of baseball. Students will analyze historical images and create an original argument using primary sources. They will pose historical questions after analyzing and reflecting on primary sources. Also, students will employ search strategies to obtain primary historical data from targeted collections of sources.

Instructions for Task:

  1. Examine the primary sources (images and documents) selected by your group. List ideas from the sources that provide insight on how they reflect American attitudes regarding race.
  2. Decide which one image and one textual document best capture your era.

Project Instructions: Create a Newspaper Page on Google Slides

  1. Student groups create a newspaper page that contains the following elements:
    • a creative newspaper title;
    • a visual image
    • a textual document 
    • an editorial analyzing how Americans’ ideas about race and ethnicity are illustrated in the sources; and proper citation of the sources used.
  2. Craft 2-3 class discussion questions based on your project
