About Dr. Porcher
Dr. Kisha Porcher is an associate professor, mother scholar-practitioner, and agent of change for Black educators and students. She is passionate and deliberate about ensuring that all students have an equitable opportunity to learn regardless of race, class, gender, socioeconomic status, sexuality and/or religion.
Dr. Porcher is an associate professor of English and Student Teacher Coordinator. She is the co-founder and co-creator of the Black Gaze Podcast. The podcast highlights, “Two women in academia, raising questions and breaking down perceptions, from a Black point of view.”
She served as a former high school English Language Arts teacher, International Baccalaureate Coordinator, Senior Educational Consultant and Assistant Professor of Professional Practice. She holds a B.A. in English and Secondary Education from Spelman College, M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from Teachers College Columbia University, and Ph.D in Teaching and Teacher Education from George Mason University.
Dr. Porcher’s research focuses on three distinct interrelated areas: 1) unpacking identity as foundational to teaching and learning 2) exploration of assets and conditions of Black students and communities 3) centering Blackness in English Education. She has published a co-edited book, From Being Woke to Doing #theWork.
Using Culturally Relevant Practices to Support Student Achievement & Sociopolitical Consciousness, and numerous peer-reviewed articles that align with her research interests. In addition, she has presented at national and international conferences to share the impact of her research. To support her work, she has received university and national grants, more specifically, the Teaching Primary Sources Library of Congress. She is the co-founder of the Centering Blackness in Teacher Education Institute.
Initiatives
Delaware Black Clinical Educator Network
The Delaware Black Clinical Educator Network is an affinity professional learning community and repository for teacher education programs, to intentionally utilize Black educators in the state of Delaware to serve as clinical educators, for students who engage in clinical experience and full-time student teaching. Along with Black educators in Delaware serving as clinical educators, they also engage in professional learning opportunities with Black educators, nationally, to continue to develop their personal and professional skills as Black educators.
Black Gaze Podcast
Dr. Porcher is co-host and co-creator (w/ Dr. Shamaine Bertrand) of Black Gaze Podcast. It is a podcast of two women in academia, raising questions and breaking down perceptions, from a Black point of view. This podcast is the blackprint for centering blackness in K-12 and higher education. While also, providing a space for Black people in all contexts a space to be centered, liberated, healed, and educated.
